A song written in honor of my mother, Hasumati Saraiya. That's her voice singing an old Indian childhood rhyme in the background. The childhood rhyme is similar to "rain rain go away" but in this rhyme, the children try to lure the rain in for tea and snacks so they can enjoy the sunshine outside. The word 'versadh" means 'rain' in Gujarati (my mother's native tongue).
My mother is a legendary story teller and my sisters and I would always beg her to tell us the old Hindu tales and adventures of Krishna and Rama that we loved to hear.
Versadh is a song about being a first generation American born to Indian immigrant parents - two generations trying to relate but raised worlds apart
lyrics
We light up like a Christmas tree every time you start
There’s no way to stop
From your words I see what you see
Of times before I start
Tell me more don’t stop
In the summer you said you’d ask the rain in for tea
In the summer you said you’d make your salt from the sea
There's the man with the serpent tongue,
Krishna kanayo found his hand inside the jar
And I feel like you’re ripped from me then glued back on top
I don’t know what’s what
In the summer you said you’d ask the rain in for tea
In the summer you said you’d make your salt from the sea
The stories sound like the part of you - of our collective hearts.
Tell me more don’t stop
And I feel like you’re ripped from me then glued back on top.
I don’t know what’s what
In the summer you said you’d ask the rain in for tea
In the summer you said you’d make your salt from the sea
